In August 1968, when Warsaw Pact troops occupied Czechoslovakia, tens of
thousands fled westward, including intellectuals and artists fearing
persecution. Among them was Miloš Reindl, a renowned artist and film
poster designer. Emigrating to Canada with his family, Reindl's creative
journey unfolded away from Canadian curators and galleries, crafting a
deeply personal body of work. As he faced trauma and loss, his art
became an existential necessity, a means of coping and expression.
Through rich archival material and personal testimonies, a documentary
portrait unravels Reindl's life and legacy, culminating in a poignant
exhibition and a tragic end. This film delves into the enigmatic
personality and artistic brilliance of Miloš Reindl, revealing a man who
could have been a leader in any realm, leaving behind a profound impact
on all who encountered him. A captivating journey through the life and

Reindl: the BOOK

Miloš Reindl, graphic artist, painter, and sought-after creator of
Czechoslovak film posters, born December 13, 1923 in Prague. Raised in
Poděbrady, childhood memories of this happy period stayed with him for
life, reflecting in his works. Hindered by his family's lack of
understanding of his artistic inclinations, his uncle, Oldřich Kerhart
(1895-1947), provided crucial support. After WWII, Reindl pursued
studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, later transferring to the
School of Applied Arts. Despite communist rule, he excelled in graphic
design, creating over 50 acclaimed film posters. In 1968, following the
Soviet invasion, Reindl emigrated to Canada, facing challenges but
eventually finding a professorship at Université Laval in Montreal.
Known for his introspective artwork, Reindl's life abroad fostered new
creativity, particularly in France, a country he adored. In 2002, facing
declining health after a stroke, he chose to end his life, leaving a
legacy of artistic innovation and teaching in Quebec.
